I understand Volvo did not make a true roof rack for a 244 DL, but did make some sort of 'rack'. Could you help me with a description of the 'rack'? I need some ability to haul a bit more for camping trips, and would like to keep the 'brick' as original as possible.

    I agree with Tule racks. I have one and after I got over the purchase price - they work great! That was 5 + years ago

    Also, I purchased a package of ratchet straps for $10 at the local big box store and they work great for tying down things down to the rack.

    Look for racks for sale in the classified- any rain gutter mounting system will work. Even if you can buy the rack with different mounts, you can always buy new mounting brackets.

    The rack are strong- I have had 150 lbs on it no problem

    Make it easy on yourself. Buy the Thule rack specifically designed for the 240. It's stronger than any other, and has lots of accessory mounts. I've had them on two of my previous cars and love them. Also get the fairing (truck size) in order to eliminate wind noise. I would buy one off of ebay. It really is the best option. No drilling required, no retrofitting or fabricating wagon racks, and it comes off easily.

      Thanx, I'm tending to agree with your basic idea. Searching about I found these:

      1/3 the price of Thule and supposedly compatible.
      Now to find a cargo box that doesn't exceed my food bill for a month!

    although i've never seen it done, i think with a bit of time and ingenuity you could cut down a wagon rack to fit. junkyards are full of them.

      Thanx, I'd considered that but I live in an apartment and that kind of thing is not allowed..... Some eyeball/forearm type measurements makes it seem possible actually. If I had a shop, hell if I had a shop I'd be dangerous.
