1-2-1 = Fault in Air Mass Meter? 200 1989

Gents,

Oh no is it toast? It's original with 404 thousand km's on it. The other code besides 1-2-1 is 2-3-1 (Fuel system compensating for rich lean mixture at cruise). If its's the AMM I will try to buy used because thay cost $ 500 plus here in Canada. Is it possible to disconnect and drive to test or will it not run.

Thanks,

I just replaced the AMM in my new 87 240 and it runs perfectly. I replaced it with one from a junk yard for 34 bucks. In my situation the car was running very rich and idling very poorly. With the key out of the ignition disconnect the AMM electrical connection. As stated in other message clean the connections because it could just be a bad connection. See how the car idles with the connector off. If it smoothes out at idle it's the AMM. I further diagnosed mine with an ohmeter and the Haynes manual. It tells you how to for proper resistance a the terminals. If you replace make sure you get the numbers from the old one, the last three are probably 007.

as i recently learned from a post by chris herbst, the connectors on the amm can become corroded. i would try cleaning first. used amm's are all over ebay, and a want ad on the class ad board might help. the car should start and run (limp home mode) with it unhooked.
