760GLE 1987- fuses near battery, what are they? 700 1987

Today I noticed that a red wire which connects between the battery positive terminal and two small fuse boxes mounted on the wheel arch just behind the battery was severed at the spade connector which hooks on to one of the boxes. There is an inline fuse on this wire also. The two fuse boxes appear to have nothing but fuses in them. They have blue transparent top covers which pull off for access. Several wires coming from the direction of the firewall connect to spade connectors on the boxes.

I tried to connect the red wire temporarily but did not notice any different behaviour in the running of the engine. My question is what are these fuses for? Also, could they be relays? I didn't take them apart so couldn't tell.

Grateful for any help which can shed light on this mystery. I should add that the car is UK spec. with the battery on the RH side looking forward.

KJ.

Maybe the previous owner removed a previously connected accessory of his own doing. My 740Tic does not have this feature.

Thanks Warren. You were just about right. I took the car to my local Volvo workshop and they confirmed these two relays are not part of the standard equipment. It turns out they are the relays for my towbar! The red supply wire had accidentally been broken at the spade connector at the relay. Since I still tow a caravan, I will get a new spade connector & fix it. Thanks again for the pointer.

KJ.
