WIRE FROM ALTERNATOR TO SOLENOID - '80 244 200

The red wire from the alternator to the solenoid is shot on the '80 244. I'm not certain about the gauge - not too good at estimating - but crimp-on fittings for 8-10 gauge are too small. I can't locate fittings for larger wire. The dealer says they only sell it as a complete engine wiring harness. I can't imagine they really charge a customer a bunch for one stinking wire, so they must have a way to replace the one. Or - do they really screw someone that badly? If anyone has some hints, I'd appreciate knowing about it.

Thanks for all the help, folks. I got wire from a car-electronics installer, and the fittings with it. The fittings are gold plated. Maybe the dealer should look at gold-plated stuff. Then they could justify the costs of some of the parts.

I just redid the wiring on my alternator not to long ago...Just replace the darn wire with your own wire and use your own hookup...have fun....

Local NAPA store should have the wire and fittings. They usually keep the big stuff in the back with the bulk battery cable

They can be soldered - you should be able to find something at
an electrical supply house or maybe even a good auto parts store.

I just did this to my car, just go to your local electronics, automotive parts, stereo intallation store. Buy X feet of 6 or 8 gauge wire, your choice, Buy proper end, krimp them on. I ran it alongside the previous bad wire and left the old one in, and zap strap along so it does not get caught on the fan or any other moving parts.

Jim -

Go with the six gauge. That wire carries the charging current via solenoid up to the battery; heavy amps. If posible, find some neoprene tubing that the wire will slip inside of, and then put it in along side the old harness. That location gets heat, oil, road whatever, and is generally a bad location for any wire without insulation made for that service.

Quite a story. Any quotes from the SLC screeners? My son-in-law had a delay from screeners because the shoes in his carry-on bag had shoe trees in them, and they didn't know what they were. He explained, but they still asked him how he could get his feet into the shoes!!

Bob

I guess you have to have special trees made to wear 'em in your shoes. Geez. It was obvious my stuff had been searched. Can you picture their concern when the X-ray shows an alternator, a ground wire that could be taken for a fuse and a multimeter? Then there was the assortment of tools. My carry-on was searched, but they said I was selected randomly. I said I imagined it was a normal thing, of course. (tongue in cheek).

Thanks, but all is well mow

Jim

Jim -

One his way to the Phoenix airport for a trip up to West Point to deliver a speech, retired USAF General Joe Fosse probably saw a Volvo. (Thus the required Volvo content is met.)

The screeners there had no idea what the Congressional Medal of Honor in his pocket was, and they attempted to confiscate it. BALOOEY. He got the local on site Lt. Col National Guard to settle things, and ALL with a minimum of Spoken English.

Not an Urban Legend, the General was (by phone) on a local talk show here. Heard the story in his own voice. He flew F4U Corsairs at Gualancanal, and later F4F's. Had "26 known kills and a bunch of smokers", and the screeners are from where?? Speaking what??

Rant over.

Good Luck,

Bob
