some tips on the 700 series needed 700

i'm a long time 240 turbo driver, but recently i spoke to a lady who is selling a 90 740 turbo with 90,000 miles, just getting broken in,haha however heres the problem its been sitting for a year becasue she had the turbo replaced and then a little while latter it just wouldent start, now i know the things i would check on a early 80's 240 but not having any experience with the 740's is there some stuff that could be causeing this that is with a newer model, electrical control stuff, or anything else you guys can think of, and like i said its most likely a turbo related problem, thanks in advance

In addition to Steve Ringlee's excellent suggestions, I will add the RPM sensor to the list. The early RPM sensors used on the LH 2.4 Jetronic were trouble prone. The early ones have a yellow mark on the black cable. The good ones have a white mark.

Hi - I am an avid ddriver of a 1986 744 GLE (non turbo), and I can say nothing but good things about it...but, I also was the sad owner in the 80's of a Peugeot 504 Diesel that had been sitting for over a year and once it started to be driven again sprung leaks all over the place. I spent many hundreds and eventually several thousand of dollars chasing oil leaks and finally replacing an engine. Just be careful as seals and gaskets can get hard and cracked when a car sits without being started for a long time.

I concur with Ringlee. It would help to know whether this is a spark or fuel issue; does the car turn over with a new battery or not?

To add onto ringlee's post, I would be worried about the gasoline in that tank, and I might go so far as to physically put aq hose in and drain it before I tried to turn it over. Nasty, old gas can totally frag an engine if it hasn't been preserved properlyt with an additive. Replace it with some nice new 91 octane and then see what happens.

Do the usual checks for no spark, no fuel. But my guess is that the no start is a result of solder cracks in the fuel pump relay, radio suppression relay, or rpm sensor. Each cheap and easy to fix
Even if it is an ECU, you can buy a used one for only $250 or so.

My bigger concern would be the possible corrosion attending a one-year shutdown. Use this to bargain her way down in price.

ok well i finally got a chance to look the car over, turns out it ran as little as a month ago, but then one day wouldent start i found that the battery is good, it cranks over nicely, after some cranking i pulled the plugs and they were wet, so i'm assuming its getting gas, the coil produces spark, and so do the individual wires going to the plugs, i grounded them out with a screw driver, and the spark seemed pretty strong, but when ipluged a spark plug on, and then cranked it over while grounding it i got very week, to no spark at all on one of them even though with the screwdriver it sparked great. so any ideas you guys have on that would be great, also someone mentioned an rpm sensor, and radio supression relay, where are these at, and how would i check em, or would i just have to get a replacement and swap it. thanks
