Here's a really vague question for you all. (weird scraping noise) 200 1987

i was driving to lunch today, and as i was backing out of my parking space, i noticed an odd scraping sound. i got out and looked, and nothing was dragging on the ground (or even close to it). later, i tried it again and the same thing happened. it only happens in reverse, and it sounds kind of like something metal is dragging on the ground, but definitely not very loud. and i'm sure it's coming from the back of the car. i think that's all. thanks

This may sound strange, but the starter may be engaging. Check the wiring near the firewall gray plug. My 86 had a bare spot that was touching another wire and engaging the starter. It was very hard to figure out what direction it was coming from.

Good luck.

Check the parking brake shoes and mechanism.

If you use your parking brake, that is probably the culprit. If you use it, the shoes stop returning after a while. My experience is that the levers that apply the brake hang up after a while. You may have to take the disc/drums off and lubricate the mechanism. I was never able to pull them both off without breaking at least one of the clips that hold the shoes down, so I recommend that you have a few on hand before you tackle the job. Another possibility is that you are hearing the pads rubbing a little before they back off totally.

Are you sure that the end of the tailpipe is not dragging. Mine does this often.

THIS IS A TRUE STORY!!!

A K-mart store manager had a foreign sports car that he maintained meticulously. One cold winter day, on the way to work, he heard a faint scraping noise outside his car while traveling down the highway. When he arrived for work, he dropped the car off at the K-mar auto shop for a check-up. Mechanics looked at it, but found nothing wrong.

Two days later, on the way to work, the manager heard the same banging and scraping noise outside his car, on the way to work. He took the vehicle back to the K-mart auto shop and reported the problem again. Their top certified mechanic put the car on a lift, checked out the suspension, and found nothing.

This happened off and on, every few days, for several weeks! The store manager INSISTED that they check his exhaust pipe for loose connections, recheck the entire suspension system, perform a full alignment, the works! He even took the auto shop manager back to his home during lunch, just so they could examine the highway and see if there was loose debris on the road. Despite all the inspections, nobody located anything wrong.

Finally, one day in March, the manager heard the same scraping and clacking noise hitting his car on the way to work. He stormed into the auto shop and INSISTED that they get to the bottom of it. The auto shop manager reviewed his complaint, showed records of how everybody in the garage, including their top certified mechanic, examined his car and could find nothing wrong. The store manager, unwilling to settle for this answer, threatened that they better find and correct his automobile before lunchtime. He handed the shop manager his car keys, pulled of his overcoat, and turned to walking away.

Suddenly, the shop manager yelled, "Hey! What happened to the belt buckle on your coat?" . . .

Every day it was cold, the store manager wore an overcoat with a long belt. He didn't realize that the buckle would sometimes hang outside the door and bang and scrape against the car while driving down the highway. In the afternoons, it was warm enough that he would just toss the coat into the passenger seat. After weeks of this scraping and banging against the lower edge of the car exterior, the soft metal belt buckle was barely hanging by a thread, dented, scarred and dirtied.

The K-mart manager looked at the belt buckle, looked at the shop manager, looked back at the buckle . . . turned a deep shade of red, took his keys and walked away!

TRUE STORY!!! IT HAPPENED AT K-MART #3090, NOW CLOSED, IN THE EARLY 1980S!!!

bad axle bearings? 200 1987

I had a similar scraping sound from the rear end of my 1980 245. It began loudly and with no warning, and continued intermittently. Not just in reverse, but going forward -- esp. at low speeds and cold. Rear calipers and parking brake shoes turned out to be okay, but replacing the right side outer axle bearing took care of the problem. At least for now...
