Speedo \ Steering wheel 200

Went to the pic n pull yesterday to look for a speedo, found two, and I am curious about a number I have always overlooked. Its printed on the face just below the odometer, my original has r0,960 the new one has r0,980. What are these numbers? Could they be the speedo's gear ratio to be used in connection with the final drive ratio? Also while I was there I saw a steering wheel I might go back for, It was on a 89, will this fit my 84? And how do I remove it, after removing the center nut I don't see any way to attach a puller. I removed one about 9 years ago but I can't remember how I did it.

Thanks,

I think the numbers on the speedos refer to differences in gearing. For example, one might be for a sedan with 185/70s and one for a wagon with 185/80s. Select the one form the same body type/wheel size as your car, although the differences are minimal in practice.
Any 200 steering wheel should fit but the later and higher spec ones are generally nicer.

Good luck,

Big Rich.

Not sure why you would want an 89 steering wheel. I just replaced my 89s steering wheel with an old Gl wheel. The 89 wheel is bulky and awkward. I think it was supposed to have an airbag in it. It is also larger than the old wheels. Less steering effort but the steering is not as responsive. The difference is very noticable. You could have my old 89 wheel but it would cost too much to send it. As was said the wheels just about fall off when you take off the bolt (except on really old 240s.. I had to use a puller for my 75)

"Not sure why you would want an 89 steering wheel."

The old DL steering wheels had a diameter of about 17", so anything smaller is generally better. I think the '89 was the transition year where it looked like an airbag wheel, but the 240 didn't get an airbag until '90. I agree that the earlier small wheels are better.

The number on the speedo has to do with the tire size, I believe, since the wagons had slightly taller tires and they used different speedos than what the sedan used. The steering wheel should fit your car and it should come off by just pulling.

BTW, which yard did you go to and where is it?

I'm not sure about the numbers on the speedo, but I have noticed wagons seem to be 0.960, and sedans 0.980. As for the wheel, it should fit. I have not found a Volvo yet that offered much resistance removeing the steering wheel. Remove the nut, and jiggle side to side, up and down alternately, and it should pop off.

Kraut, Thanks for the response, my car with the r0,960 is a wagon and the r0,980 I got was out of a sedan.

Bruce -

Check the stock tire size for the cars regarding the speedo swap. There's an info sticker on the rear edge of the RF door. Knowing Volvo they probably tweaked something in the speedo rather than have two sizes of drive gear on the assembly floor. Wagons and GL's used to have 185R14 and the DL sedan was 175R14. (I think more recent 240's have same tire for all model.)

Once the new speedo is in, clock yourself. How you would do it around DC may not be easy b/c you need mileposts (a la Interstate) and a five mile stretch where you can hold the car really close to 60mph.

Good Luck,

Bob
