New 122s owner looking for a little advice... 120-130 1965

Hey Guys,
This site has already been very valuable to me, but I need a little help. I just inherited a 1965 122s. It is a great looking car that i have fallen in love with despite the large amount of work that lies ahead of me. I know less than I'd like to about restoring this car and I've been stumbling on a few issues. First of all, the electrical problems I am having have led me to the fact that the wiring in this car really needs some help. Previous owner did a lot of "work-arounds" that weren't in the best interest of the long term life of the car. Does anyone know of any wiring harnesses that are out there for this car? Has anyone ever done this sort of job before?
Also, almost all of the bushings on the car are SUPER old and in need of repair. Any suggestions for accomplishing the replacement of them? Or should I just out-source this to a mechanic? Thanks for the help!

I was resistent...no pun...to the fuse box re-hab project, but I went for it. It was easy if you have any soldering experience, and fun, but most of all I haven't had to jump-start once since the repair....Thanks Ron Kwas the guru of 122.

Good luck on a rewarding journey of automobile, enlightenment.

You might want to see about your fuse box. They tend to get tarnish
(nonconductive film) between the laminations that makes the red light
come on whenever you turn something on. I've seen new ones offered.
What I did was to drill out the rivets, sand all the surfaces shiny,
put screws in place of the rivets and solder the whole mess together.
This is NOT a 15 minute job but it seems to solve that problem permanently.
There are lots of connections that seem to lose their conductivity. Scraping
down the tabs and pinching the faston connectors with pliers to make them
tighter seems to help a lot.
Over half of my nonfunctioning lights had good bulbs but corroded terminals,
usually in the socket. Appropriate scraping solved those problems also.

How are your floors? I was surprised to see a geyser in front of my passenger
seat, under the floormat one rainy day in Panama. I ended up replacing
all of them eventually, using 16 gauge sheet arn. The biggest problem in
welding them in was that I had started wearing bifocals since I had done
much gas welding. Water comes in around the windshield, gets under the
rubber floormat and soaks the fiber matting underneath. As it ferments, it
becomes acid and rusts the floor through from the inside.

IPD sells bushing kits. It is a fair amount of work to put them in but
well worthwhile.

I'm envious. I only stand to inherit Toyotas...

I don't have an Amazon, but someday I will, so I'm trying to stock up the wisdom now. Regarding bushings, the print version of VClassics magazine had an article during the summer of 2000 on replacing bushings. I'd go to their web site and page through their archives -- I betcha you'll find something useful.

Best of luck with your new Amazon.

Pete;

With the simplicity of a 122 wiring harness (one page in the owners manual - I love it), unless there has been an underhood fire where wires really got melted and truly need to be replaced, a lot of electrical repair might just consist of cleaning and squeezing (or replacing) crimps, cleaning terminals of green stuff and adding a dab of anti-corrosive zinc paste.

Drive;

Welcome to the fold of the transportationally enlightened, only occasionally electrically challenged, but almost always automotively impressed, entertained, and uniquely amused.
