Transmission problems 200

My car will not move unless the throttle is about 3/4 open. The trans is slipping. It is an aw71 trans in an 85'240. I replaced the fluid and filter(complete system flush) and still have the same problem. Does this sound like a bad torque converter? I appreciate any advise in helping me solve this problem. Thanks

Bad pressure, blown seals in the valve body... several potential causes.

If you're in the market for a transmission, Matt's suggestion for a junkyard piece is the best. They're cheap and available, and usually pretty good.

If the fluid level is normal, the clutches are probably shot. A professional rebuild will run approx $1500, a little less if you remove and reinstall the transmission yourself. There are no bands in this transmission, and therefore no adjustments to be made.

Or you can attempt DIY rebuild. The master rebuild kit runs about $130, and includes all the parts you need. I have not attempted a rebuild myself but others on the board have done so with success.

Or you can get a used unit from a salvage yard (which is what I recently did for a 740). I bought an clean and drip-free AW70L from a '92 940 for $250, and I have been very pleased with it so far.

Does that tranny have adjustable bands? That's a cheap thing to adjust... Just may work. Had an old Ford that had the same symptoms and just adjusting the bands got another 35k miles out of it.
