Brembo brake rotor fit problem 200 1986

Has anybody else had a problem with the calipers not fitting over new Brembo brand vented front rotors on a n/a 1986+ sedan?

This rotor does not allow the caliper to slide down over it -- the caliper is a good 1/4" outbound of its mounting and the caliper will not slide down into place. The rotor is either too thick or something is off-setting to the outboard. Also, it just barely slips between the caliper halves.

box markings are: 1228153 with part number: 270739-6 stamped on the edge of the rotor is "MIN THK 22.8 mm" I figure this is the minimum thickness. Overall, it measures about 24 mm.

the other rotor I have lists the same part numbers, except the "-6" does not appear after 270379. I haven't taken this one out of the box to try.

Bought these several months ago from www.thepartsbin.com (a.k.a. alloem.com)

anybody had this trouble? Do I have the correct part?

I tried 3-4 times to fit the one rotor. It just sticks out too far for the caliper.

Brembo brake rotor fit problem 200 1986

Lucky me, I have some used Brembos in original box marked 270739. One measures .863 or almost 22mm as my green book specs the 260 vented Girling for new.

I notice the 240 vented calls for a 24mm thickness - new. I know these Brembos were never that thick, so I'm guessing they made one replacement part for both models - 270739. Pretty sure the -6 is just Volvo's check digit.

Just in case it might be helpful, I measured from the inner boss that seats against the spindle to the most inboard side of the rotor face: 2.405" These rotors of mine were almost new, but quickly warped, which might be another story involving tire shops...

Hope this helps,

I dunno, Art. this rotor measures about 24mm and it is offsetting the inner boss by about 4mm. Consequently the caliper will not slide into place.

So, I can't understand how the spec for the 240 is 24mm. Should be more like 20mm by by eyeball. I can't remember, ut the other rotor I received "looks more like it" and is stamped MIN TH 20.5 (I think)

No matter, it's just that alloem.com (the parts bin) had sent the wrong rotor in a bashed up 270739 box.

Just academic, now that you got them to send you a fresh one, but I guess I didn't read your post carefully, thinking I knew you had an '84-- the green book specs I have are up to '85. So I went to see what Bentley says, thinking your '86 might be different.

Bentley doesn't talk 260s, so it calls out only one spec -- new 24mm with 20.4 the minimum.

Now, I'm concerned about the Brembos I purchased, that were most certainly not 24mm thick new. I know it's only a silly two millimeters, but that might make a lot of difference in life and resistance to heat damage.

Maybe it isn't the thickness spec that was wrong on your disc, but the offset instead. And maybe if I want a better disc, I should avoid the Brembo that served so well in my former life (before Volvos).

This guy Nate had your exact problem. Check out this thread:

Interesting, the part numbers you mention aren't anything like the part numbers that I found on my Brembo boxes. Check the thread for that info.

I would say that if it doesn't fit, then it's the wrong part.

Greg

Hmm, ok just checked the RPR catalog, they list part #1228153 for front girling vented. ??????

They dont have anything saying 270739, but they do show a part 270738 for 76/77 ate vented front. wierd stuff

Yes. This same number also appears.

I believe the problem occurs because the outter side of the vented rotor is noticable thicker than the inner side. About 4mm, according to another guy who had this problem last month.

I checked the part numbers through BB sponsor, FCP as well. The 207739 is what they show.

No P/N appears on the rotor, so who know what that actually is? the box appears to have been opened & re-sealed. Also, the rotor itself had been ground in a random, circular pattern, as if to remove some superficial rust.

I believe this was somebody's re-stock.
