car doesn,t start after running 700 1986

i have had four experiences with the car when after it was runnying and i stopped to shop and when i tried to start the car it wouldn't start. i checked the fuses the first time and they were good. the second time i was having it towed and the mechanic tried to start it with no luck. he opened the hood and got no spark when i turned the key. he towed it in and left it set for four days before he could work on it. guess what it started. two days ago i stopped about 200 yards from the garage and the car would not start. the mechanic and a few of us went out to push the car. we tried to start it before pushing it and it wouldn,t start. we pushed it into the garage bay and put the hood up and the damn thing started. any suggestions or good diagnostions out there..... bob

car doesn,t start after running 700 1986

Hi!

I have had something similar on my Volvo 745 GL 88

You probably dont believe this but just hear me out. 2 mechanics failed to solve it and I had bought a new starter and planned to change it when I started to think.

There are 2 + cables going from the battery. 1 goes to the starter (thick one) and one goes to the ignition key. Check that the connection is really good for both cables!

What happend to me was that when car was cold the cables were hard and the connection was good enough. When the car was warm to cables soften and there was no connection for the + ignition key cable.

/best of luck

I had a similar trouble with a 82 240 and it turned out to be in the dist. I replaced the unit in it and it has worked good. I would also try pushing the gas pedal all the way to the floor and try to start it.....that worked with one of my 700 series that I was having trouble with....it always started for me...hope this is of some help.

I had this in my 740GLE wagon (or estate as we say in UK, it turned out to be a dry joint on the ECU (behind the fusebox) about $40 to replace here

I found my starter turning but engine not starting to be a faulty fuel injector relay. It's located under the dash behind the passengers left kick panel on my '89 Turbo wagon. I at first thought it to be a spark problem, but this cured the problem for me. Jim
