Leaking New Water Pump 200 1992

I have a 92 240 sedan with 100,000 miles (4 cylinder engine). Just had the water pump replaced by the local shop. The shop seems great, but just started using them. The new pump was installed. There is some "seepage" of antifreeze between the top of the pump and the cylinder head. The shop said that this is a problem area, keep an eye on it and it may seal itself. They seem to take possession of the problem, but any thoughts on this.

I would appreciate any opinions on this.

Leaking New Water Pump - one more opinion 200 1992

Guess I'd expect the most general of service facilities to be able to handle a water pump replacement on any car, but say the tech does know what the slots are for, there are still two more opportunities for trouble. (my opinion)

1) Aftermarket pumps sometimes have very rough casting finishes where the donut seal goes, and,

2) The surface of the head mating with that seal is prone to deep pitting.

Good luck, it sounds like they are willing to make you happy to return.

That leak will not fix itself, who are they kidding.
Inform them that the correct procedure is to lever the pump up slightly while the bolts are tightened. This compresses the donut shaped gasket between pump and head.

They are blowing in your ear in hopes you won't press the issue. Scores of shadetree mechanics change waterpumps without any seepage so it isn't too much to ask of a professional shop.

Ask them to order another waterpump gasket set (which will include the rubber donut that is apparently leaking on yours) and ask them when you should bring the car back to have the job done correctly. Make sure it is understood up front that you are giving them a second chance to to the job correctly and you don't intend to part with another dime for what you have already paid for.

Shouldn't be a problem area. It's just two flat surfaces with a gasket between. It is possible that some of the old gasket material had not been fully removed creating an uneven seating surface for the new gasket.

As far as leaks sealing themselves, they sometimes do and they just as easily become bigger leaks. If it doesn't stop real soon, have them re-do the gasket on the pump.
