Hangin Cloth ceiling 700

The cloth on the roof of my car is sagging. Someone told me that if I apply a glue water mixture with a paint rollor that will solve the problem. Any other suggestions or experience with this?

Thanks
AEV

I replaced my hanging ceiling. We took all the edge trim off (Wagon). Dropped the fiberboard ceiling, removed the cloth. Then I bought some sticky spray from the auto parts store. Went down to the local fabric store and bought some nice gray material. Sprayed glue in sections and laid the material down on it, section by section (don't try to do the whole ceiling in one shot). Trim the excess cloth, flipped it over and glued the trim cloth down. Hauled it back into the car. Re-installed the lights and trim ...and walla!!! New Ceiling. It's more fun if you have a helper that you can yell at...or at least hold the ceiling up as you put the trim back on. Saved alot of money...but patience I hear is a virtue. George

No, the glue mixture you mention will not work. In fact, it will damage the headliner board (the material the headliner is glued to), and increase teh expense to really "fix" this down the road.

Pull the headliner board and replace the headliner completely. Go to a fabric shop and they'll have some. Make sure you get 1/8" for the WHOLE roof. People will tell you to use 1/4" on the roof and 1/8" on the sunroof, but this is incorrect. The headliner must squeeze into small cracks around areas such as the sunroof edge, front window guard, etc. 1/4" will not fit properly, and will pull out again and again.

BTW, be very careful when you remove the headliner board from teh car... it can get fragile with age and break if you put too much strain on it (i.e., don't let it dangle free, support its own weight with your hands).

Last note, headliner material will cost you about $75. If you frag the headliner board a replacement from IPD or volvo will cost you about 5-6 times that amount, at least... so be careful.

Good luck,
Rick

There are probably things you can try, but if you want it to look good, you need to replace the headliner. Not a hard, or expensive job, if you do it yourself. Though a bit time consuming.

I'm gonna replace mine pretty soon, There is a detailed procedure in the 700/900FAQ in the "features" drop down menu at the top of every page.
