Idle Air Control Valve 700 1988

I am hopeful someone can help me without guessing. I have a 1988 Volvo 740 GLE, 2.3 4cly,auto trans,non-turbo. My idle air control valve is worn out and I have already took it apart and cleaned it ( comintator, contact points & light luberication ). My question is when I install the replacement IACV does it have to be in a certain position before I plug it in ? I also need to know is it nessesary to disconect the battery negitive and positive cables to reset the computers back to their default ( new information input from all the other sensors and electrical componants because I have replaced the IACV with a new one )? I do not want to go ahead without knowing more, so I don't end up with a result that would be nothing more than the IACV hunting for it place within the electrical family it co-exists with. Any factual information you can provide I will be very thankful for. Thank you for your time trying to help me out. Dan Metz.

HI: Thanks for the fast reply. What lead me me to changing it out is the idle speed when cold would not increase or decrease the idle speed intill I tapped on it with my pocket knife then the idle would increase to around 1150 or so and as the engine warmed up and as I would come to a stop sign or red light the idle speed would gradually drop , and when the engine was fully warmed up it would run a nice smooth 750rpm. So The IACV is hanging up and is worn out. Thanks for your help, Dan Metz.

Its plug and play. Simply swap it out, the ecu does the rest.

Just plug it in. (ignition off of course). The ECU will take over and it will immediatly find the correct position and control idle speed assuming everything else is OK.

I don't think they often need replacement. just thorough cleaning when they act up.

Hi David: Thanks for the info and fast answers. I did take it apart and cleaned it , and while inspecting it noticed the contact points were worn down to a sliver and a lot of burring acumulation due to the wearing down process. So I need to change it out. Thanks again; Dan Metz.
