Clunking noise in front end; Help, please? 700

I have a '92 740 wagon. Lately, I've heard a pronounced "clunking" noise when I go over even the slightest variations in the pavement (manhole covers, pavement seams, etc.) It seems no more pronounced when turning. It also seems to be coming from only the driver's side. Finally, it seems as though I can feel the impacts through the steering wheel. I've "bounced" on the right front end, and there does seem to be more movement than on the other three corners, but it's not excessive. Any suggestions? Thanks!

check your brake pads, there is a spring on them that keeps them from raddling. One broke off of my 90 740 at 130k mi it sounds terrible.

Good advice from Matt. If the car has close to or more than 100k miles on it go through the entire front end if it has not been done already.

Clunking noise in front end; Help, please? 700

Clunking noises are hard to diagnose. Most common causes: front strut rod bushings (where the strut rod meets the control arm), lower ball joints, sway bar bushings. Less likely causes: outer tie rod ends, inner tie rod ends, upper ball joint / upper strut bearing, rear strut rod bushing (where the strut rod bolts to the frame), inner control arm bushing (where the control arm bolts to the frame).

Take a look at the rubber boots on the lower ball joints... if they are split, I'd replace them. While you have the front end disassembled, I'd go ahead and replace the conical front strut rod bushings, sway bar bushings, and outer tie rod ends also. Total cost for parts should be around $100, maybe $150 from your favorite online parts vendor. Labor around 3 or 4 hours (it least that's what it takes me). You'll also need a front-end alignment ($50).

on my 88 740, I replaced the struts and on my 1st one i overtighten the tube nut (thought the flange was flush with tube opps + were pretty coroded to start with) anyway it seemed to snug up so I tried it, couldn't believe it didn't fly apart after putting the coil spring together, didn't reason out the total assembly, that's what was actually holding it all together was that nut! Got it all back together and soon ended up with a clunking sound from the fnt end it was the nut sripted out and clunking against the tube when hitting mild road variation ands pot holes couldn't make the noise by just bouncing the car. I am not usally that bad at repairs, it was only the 2nd time i messed with struts got new strut housing and rides great now!!!
      Hope this might help
      Kurt B
