oil filter 120-130

I've always thought that oil filters for B18A's & B18B's were the same. My part supplier's online catalogue seems to think differently: I got a quote for a B18B oil filter but nothing for a B18A... human error while entering data, or real difference? What about B20's filter on a B18??

Thanks Séb

There are different sizes of filters with the same mounting and
as far as I know any of them will work on B18, B20, B30 and probably
also some of the newfangled OHC engines also. Maybe the bigger can
has more filtering stuff in it - I'm not sure it is any better but it
does hold more oil. Depending on engine temp, price of oil, presence
or absence of an oil cooler and driving habits, you may prefer a bigger one.

They're all the same for B18, B20, B21, B23, B230 Etc. Your local Volvo dealer will have one. The oil filter is applicable for cars 1962 on. Be carefull you don't get given one for the 340, some of which use an identical looking filter with a metric thread. The one you want is imperial.

Pete

Imperial?? I thought it was UNF.
In any case it is an inch size, like all REAL Volvo stuff.
(Possible exception of electrical gear. Don't know if electrons
can tell the difference.
2 atoms were walking down the street.
One says, "I've lost an electron!"
Other says, "Are you sure??"
One says, "I'm POSITIVE!!" (ar ar ar))

George:

Your humor is revolting and rubs me the wrong way. It belongs ion a different posting board, although they may charge you more. Those folks are farad away and have little capacitance for Ohmish measures -- they'll resist all current efforts. Depending on how you conduct yourself, expect static from them, too.

Wouldn't you describe a Unified thread as Imperial?

Actually to be pedantic a PV 444 is actually metric, they only started to go imperial with the late 544:-)

"Wouldn't you describe a Unified thread as Imperial?"

Although many of the unified threads are functionally interchangeable
with BSW and BSF, they are one-for-one interchangeable with the old USS
and NF series of threads, using the same 60°Vee thread and the same pitches,
not including the Brit 26 and 30 tpi. Based on that, I'd have to say
as a minimum, "not exactly" in response to your question. Note that the
Whitworth thread is a 55° Vee.

I got to find out about some of the differences working on a 1949
cast iron BSA Gold Star back in my high school days. Great machine!
(in spite of certain Lucas components) Good thing we were working
in a machine shop in those days!

AFAIK, all engines 62-98 use the same filter, except diesels.

Does anyone have experience with the K&N oil filter? I use these on my other cars and they seem to do the trick. Ten bucks is a little much for an oil filter, but they do seem to weigh about twice what an ordinary filter weighs, so I am going to guess they have higher burst resistance and more filtration materials.

Thanks.
