Hi Peter,
My heart goes out to you for you are suffering from the same problem as I. Here is a quick fix. Keep a long stick in your car's luggage area. A baseball bat may be just fine. The next time the car does this to you, open the hood, get the stick out and give a good few whacks on the engine and I guarantee you the car will start. If anybody ask what in the world you are doing, just say you got a snake in your engine compartment......
Just joking... SERIOUSLY, my 1991 940GLE has the same problem like yours. I have located the fault and I think it may help you as well. I am not sure what you meant by the car won't start. But I am going to assume that you mean nothing happens when you turn the key to start position, not even the starter motor works.
At first I did exactly what you are doing. Sit it out, wait for the engine to cool down and start the car but mine would take about 20 minutes or so. Then I found out that the problem is the starter solenoid and not the fuel relay. I checked the fuel relay but no problem there. So whenever, my car does not start I would take the spanner and give a few gentle tabs on the solenoid and starter and the car would instantly start at a single attempt.
So the next time your car does not start, try the method above and if your car starts .... you have located the problem. As for me, I am quite happy with whacking the solenoid for the time being. But whacking the solenoid is not a long term solution. Repairing it or changing it is far better solution.
Happy whacking!
