When I was having backfire issues, the dealer advised me to go for basic plugs: BP6ES, nothing fancy. Works a treat.

I replaced Bosch copper plugs with NGK copper plugs. I didn't notice any difference, and the car ran fine ('87 240, B230F). I bought a small tune-up kit from FCP Groton, and I paid a couple dollars more to try the NGK plugs. So far, so good.

I prefer the Bosch plugs (standard) NGK work, but my 245 GLTi 233k mi, likes the Bosch. As far as the life of a Platinum so what? I replace my plugs every 15k mi. Fresh plugs are better, they take alot of heat!

any preference between the w6dc & the w7dc ?

For a stock 240 the stock plugs, which say Volvo on them, work for ~30 kmiles, as do the correct standard Bosch plugs. In either case your looking about 8 bucks or less.

Dont waste your money on expensive "special" plugs. They have been advertising that stuff for over 40 years so dont think the Splitfire is something new, etc.
However, platinum plugs are actually nice from longivity standpoint. I would just go by a good set of Bosch.
If the car is running worse now with your new plugs, perhaps you broke or stressed the sparkplug wires when installing them. Check the resistance on the wires. I forget the exact range, but I think something like 4000 ohms resistance per foot is good for carbon wires and around 200 for a wire core sparkplug wire.
Also might want to check the gap on the plugs again.

i think the splitfire & the v-power are a bit different, same idea, just ngk has the electrode ni a v-shape vs. the metal overhead. the platinum plugs also feature a resistor vs. none in the stock setup, not sure how that affects performance of the plug.
gapped the plugs twice, replaced the leads, off to get some regulars today.

According to my mechanic, you should not use the platinum plugs in the 240, the heat range is off; just use standard Bosch plugs.

I was told the same thing, a few years back, by a reputable Volvo shop, although Bosch platinum are (like any make) available in a range from 'hot' to 'cool'.
I do know that after running platinum plugs in my '79 242 for about 15,000 miles the #1 exhaust valve became stuck. Engine had over 200,000 on it so it was probably inevitable but I can't help but think the platinums hastened this malfunction.

this is sort of the direction my research was pointing. also the platinum & iriium plugs feature a resistor whereas the manual calls for w6dc resistorless plugs, of course no-one offers a cross reference table when i go shopping.
any preference of ngk vs. bosch ? i noticed that most of the discussions on here seemed to favour ngk as does the ipd tune-up kit.
thanks for the feed-back =)

I used the new Champion Copper plus plugs.. They were cheap but they aren't that great. Weird idle and slight miss when the engine is cold, but runs fine afer a few minutes. I switching back to Bosch in a few weeks. Would the NGK's be better?

Yes. That is what most people here run.
