Hmmm. My '86 740T has the original O2 sensor at 290K miles. Maybe I should change it to improve upon my 26 - 28 mpg. (by now the engine is of the ultra low friction type)

Good write up with one exception. We do not all have a scopes in our home garages. A digital meter (high impedance) will do fine to check O2 sensor output. Also all LH2.0 and 2.2 systems have the lambda sond (O2) test connector output from the ECU which signals when mixture is OK and enables easy mixture adjustment at the AMM. Just testing the O2 sensor at it's connector does not ensure proper operation of the system.

REAL Volvos don't have catalytic convertors or oxygen sensors -
they don't need them!

Yes, real Volvos use converted plumbing fixtures for gas delivery.
