looking at 960/V90's

We've been driving an 88 740 Turbo Wagon (5spd) since the early 90's. We've got about 175,000 miles on it. Probably has several years left in it, but its time for us to update. I looked at a few of the 850/V70 wagons. My first impression was positive (especially after driving a 97 R), however logic and good experience is pulling us back to RWD.

We want the straight 6 960 or V90. Are there any years to avoid or seek? What year did they switch from the V6 to the S6? My wife was told by her friend (must! be reliable information) that 95 (which they owned) was a bad year. Comments? Thank you.

The 960, S90 and V90 from 1992 to 1998 all share one inline 6 cylinder engine. None has a V6 engine. Cams were changed on the engine around the middle of that period in favor of more low speed torque at the cost of some top end horsepower. Early engines required timing belt changes every 30,000 miles, late engine every 70,000 miles. If you buy the car, be sure to change the timing belt and its tensioner religiously. I suggest you do it every 25,000 miles with an unchanged early engine and every 50,000 miles in the late engines. You want to be safe rather than sorry. Suspension was also changed in 1995 in favor of better handling and roadholding, perhaps at the cost of more maintenance and repairs. This is a low production volume Volvo series that first introduced the "white" engines at a time when the company ran short of cash and cut back investment in making the cars reliable. The cars can be comfortable and perform well, but require careful preventive maintenance. Even then, they can be unreliable. Repairs are not cheap, but this is normal for new cars whether from Volvo, BMW, Mercedes or Audi. Before you buy, I suggest you search 960, S90 and V90, here at Brickboard and particularly 700/900 FAQ from the Features menu. Still, I prefer those cars to 5 cylinder cars like 850, S70 or V70. Perhaps more recent cars like the S80 are more desirable. Nonetheless, Volvo ran short of cash in recent years until Ford bought it. Car companies cut corners when they run short of cash. Perhaps Ford will renew Volvo. Until then, Mercedes, BMW and Audi offer better new cars.

Don't be scared away from the 960/V90 series, there are some lemons, but I see a lot of them on the road here in the northeast and not many for sale!

It's true that there were block casting problems in the 95 (possibly early 96) model year, so you should avoid those. If I were looking, I'd try to find a '97 or '98 model with all the maintenance records (pref. dealer). As long as it hasn't had any major/recurring problems and all scheduled maintenance has been performed religiously, it should be a good car.

I think you mean the 92 models and some later year models had a problem with porous blocks. By now most of those problems should have shown up so I do not see that as a problem. I have a 96 964 with 87,000 that I have been pleased with. I really like the way it rides and handles.

Persoanally, I'd keep the 740T and fix it up. I've got a 960 wagon and it's been fine. I recently replaced my radiator since the car has 100K miles on it and I don't want any trouble. I also just bought a V70. Nice car, strange 5 cyl vibration and smaller than the 700's and 900's. Very airy cabin though.

You can get really good performace out of the 740T. I know this, personally.

Avoid this car: if you want a decent machine, buy a 60/70/80 series.
