Volvo offers a kit for adding a digital ambient temp gauge to the 91-92 940, that is a digital gauge for the lower left of the cluster, and the wiring and thermocouple (additional kit). Has anyone actually bought one of these? I'm afraid to call up and ask how much it costs, but I miss not having one.
On the same note, the kit is available for 93-95 940s, and I'm interested in putting on one of those as well. The 93-95 cars come prewired for the part, however, so they don't need the mounting kit.
Comments?

The similar looking 240 ambient temp gauge lists for over $200. The sender was about $40 alone when I bought one from a dealer (p/n 1347010-9). They told me it was the same one used on the 940s and 850s, so I assume the guts are the same.
I don't know what the differences are in the dash, but Borton Volvo still lists a digital ambient temp gauge to fit the '84-'87 760 dash. List $140.39, price $50. Did the size of the gauges change at some point? Having never owned a 7/9 series car, they all look the same to me.
Good luck.

That's what I'm figuring on. I won't spend THAT kind of money on it.
The 240 gauge is way different than the 700/900 series gauge... unless.... you mounted it in a pod on the A pillar.
Hm...
The 940 gauge slides into a little rectangular spot in the instrument cluster. I ran across the same thing on Borton's website, with the temp gauge for the up to 88 model 760. In 1991 they cut the upper corners of the cluster off to give the dash a different look than the 90 and earlier models. That ate 2 gauge spots that would ordinarily be available for putting in a temperature gauge.
So the only way to get around it is to either pony up the dough for Volvo's gauge (or steal it from another 940), or mount a round one in the A pillar pod, which I doubt I'd do anyway. But someone might...
Thanks for the response.

I never saw one of those in person. All I know of are the analog amb. temp gauges of which I've had a few, which would probably fit in an A-pillar pod in the 700 (same size, I believe).
I don't have any pictures of the rectangular digital display for the later 700 and 900. It's a backlit LCD readout.

Chris,
I can't remember what the price is of each component, bt it may be as high as $250 for both. I can check at my dealer if you need a comparison. I like the way the market it...hey, you can by the gauge alone, but you also may want to consider the thermocouple that makes it work! I don't think the job is that hard, and there are several Brickster that have done it, as I recall.
I've wanted to put one in since I've owned my beast, but that 960 dash looks daunting. No more tinkertoy access to these things.

Thanks; that's what I figured. I'll call wholesale tomorrow and find out what the deal is (read: if they'll MAKE me a deal).

Just called my dealer in Illinois. He couldn't locate this as an accessory kit for the '92 960. May not be available anymore. But he found it for the 94 (part # 9166579) which I presume would fit most any 900 series. $168 +tax. I think I'm going to go ahead and order one..they seem to be getting scarce.

Cool! That's not as bad a price as I originally thought, although not cheap. I never even had a chance to call up on the parts today.
You'll beat me to it--let us know about how it works out.

I am interested to find out myself, I have a 91 940 SE. Please keep us updated!
Thanks!

I'd be happy to, but rereading Chris's note, it appears as thoughthe 94s were pre-wired, so that might mean that the kit I just quoted doesn't have the wiring and thermocoupler. If anyone else can get a bead on the part # 9166579 as a complete kit, I'd be a lot happier about ordering it.

That's from Volvo's website. I think I looked up 92 940, which is the same as 92 740 and similar to 92 960.
