Turbo on a Non-Turbo 82 Diesel Wagon? 200

Hey guys,

Well, I have decided that 78 horses coming from my 82 (possibly 83, have to check on that) Wagon's D24 engine is just not enough, and am wondering if I can pop in a turbo from an 83 or 86 760 GLE with the Turbo-Diesel, or 86 740 GLE Turbo Diesel. Hell, I'll even go for some kind of aftermarket turbo, whatever will give me a few more horses.

Is this possible? If so, is it really hard and time consuming to do, or just a drop-it-in, set a screw type of thing?

Thanks in advance,
Rotor

I've been toying with the same idea for my '84 diesel, but am unsure if making the head breathe that hard is a good idea.
The D24T is lower compression than the D24.
I'm guessing that one would want to set it with an intentional lag on the boost, and limit the boost.
Finding out what safe maximum combustion temps are for this engine and installing a pyrometer in the exhaust would help you keep from melting the exhaust valve out of it( you would probably need to keep a good eye on that gauge on long hills to keep out of trouble).

If you want just a little extra kick the free-flow air filters work very nicely on diesels.
I put the Amsoil air filter on and got a nice increase in pickup( and yes , I'm an Amsoil dealer.....shameless plug), I imagine the K& N's would feel great as well( although they do let more dirt in).
Advancing timing a bit helps too.

      Mr. Ludwick,

I just replaced the air filter with another normal one, along with a fuel filter and fixed the exhaust coupling on the exhaust line under the front seat area (it was disconnected, and I was going deaf!) and got quite a good pick up in power, but still not as much as I would like. Can you tell me more about the free flow air filters? Do I replace the entire filter unit with another, or is it just the filter paper (or whatever you call it, just the filter itself)? What does the cost look like?

Also, am I alone when I say that the intake looks a bit small in diameter on the air filter unit? Maybe a bit of a scoop could add a couple PSI?

      Thanks again!
      Rotor

You just replace the element as you would with the paper type, except instead or throwing it away , you just clean it and re-oil it about every 25000 miles
The Amsoil filter runs approxamately $28.85 after shipping.

The intake tube on the filter box is smaller than the diameter of the intake manifold for a reason... part of the intake air is calculated to come from blow-by gasses through the breather tube. If you increase the diameter of the filter box tube , the intake air will come from the path of least resistance( fresh air ) and the engine will not properly scavenge the blowby gasses from the crancase, leading to increased crankcase pressure( i.e. leaking seals and increased oil consumption etc.)

Best to leave the factory air box in place and go with the good filter

I have seen for sale in the UK a 240 with BMW Diesel and one with a Nissan Diesel. Don't know wich one, but you might be better of looking for someting non-volvo. Given Volvo's reputation with Diesels, this might not be bad idea.

A D24T from a 760TD will not fit. Hits the strut tower.

as to what turbo would fit exactly, I can't say. as to installing one on a non-turbo diesel, no biggie. I do suggest setting the turbo boost very very low to start & work up to insure you're not going to overload the valve train.
It's a slightly different story putting a turbo on a non-turbo gas engine though.
