I found a 1993 245 Classic (120 K) for $3950 two months ago on Autotrader. Total cost to fly out, drive back, and fix $4500.

Just look hard. You can get a good 1993 with <130K for that $$$$.

agree with JFrench, and maybe even with fewer miles..there is a GLUT of used cars on the market due to new car dealers offering 0% financing etc...wheel and deal (not meant as a pun)

NA:

Have your friend look for a $3,000 car. Any car you find in that price range is unlikely to be a "needs nothing" kind of car. There's a nice white '90 744T with saddle leather interior here at a local used car lot with a $2,988 asking price on it. Just over 100K miles and in decent shape. Even has decent tires on a set of Hydra alloys. If I needed another car, I'd jump on that one, then plan to put the other $1,000 into it in the form of IPD sways, new shocks and struts, renewing belts and hoses and changing all fluids to synthetic. However, with six Volvos already in the stable, I think I'd find myself sleeping on the sofa if I brought home another one!

I bought my '92 244 for $3900 from the local dealership. They had $4995 on it for several weeks, but no takers, so I jumped on it. It had 186k on it, but now it's got 200k and runs no worse (hopefully better) than when I bought her. Maybe I got lucky, but if you look around you should be able to find one.

You can look on eBay if you're the type to buy cars without looking at them first :)

Good luck,
Seth

Either a 1990's 740 or 940.

If he/she wants a 240, then a nice 1991, 92 or 93. Better air, airbag, ABS, quieter etc. Volvo had many years to improve them. I bought a nice 1990 two years ago for about that amount of money, but no ABS - don't miss it though.

Look for hidden rust on all models.

Good luck!

Um, one's that's worth $10k and being sold by a foolish person?

Seriously, You should be able to get a 1990+ 740T for that kinda money...
