timing belt install help 200

Today I have installed a new timing belt and seals for the first time on my 86 240, manual 4speed with O/D, it seemed to go ok, and the car starts and runs.

Upon checking, I notice that the crank pulley is wobbling like crazy.
I disassembled everything again, thinking the pulley wasn't tight or aligned with the key on the crank, but everything seemed ok and tight.

Any help, advice, and opinions would be greatly appreciated so that I can safely drive my car home from the garage where I'm working.
Thanks in advance - Ricko

That pulley/vibration dampener is a three-piece deal. Center, then a rubber ring, then the outer pulley. Have a look and see if the center is running true while the outer pulley wobbles. If yes, new pulley is required as rubber part is shot. Sorry.

Good Luck,

Bob

BC-Thanks for the response.
didn't notice any rubber on my pulley assembly. Is it on 86's? Do you know what page it is in Bentley?
I double checked the BB archives and disassembled the front of the engine again.(4th time) The round "guide" for the timing belt,(looks like a large washer with a key) the forward one, had been installed backward and had started to chew up the belt, and had moved, so when I torqued the big bolt-washer down it created a new key mark on the guide.
I'll go to the PAP and grab another, and check the assembly for a rubber ring?
thanks again for the input. I'll try again.-Rick

Have a look at Bentley page 215-5, Fig. 11, for a cross-section of the vibration dampener, AKA harmonic balancer. The rubber part looks to be quite thin, likely is hard to see. All B230 engines have them AFAIK.

I have two B230F's in my daily drivers, and have had no problems with disintegration of the rubber part. There have been several BB posts over the past 9 - 12 months about that, and that is what I passed on to you.

Glad you found something else that might be the cuplrit. Those balancers don't come cheap.

Good Luck,

Bob

Thanks BD. After rechecking and reassembling, the car is running with just minimal wobble. I'll read up on my Bentley's too. Thanks for your help.
