engine cuts out for a second, sometimes kills engine 200

Thanks in advance for all who may respond.
My 1986 240 DL will cut out for a split second, sometimes the motor even dies. It is intermittent, but very unsettling, especially when it happened the first time on the freeway. Any thoughts?

Check the fuel pump fuse in the interior fuse box too! I had this problem on my old 240, and was able to put the selector in Neutral, then reach down with my left hand, count down 5 fuses (by feel), twist the fuse to grind off the corrosion, then restart the car while I was still rolling down the highway, and put it back in Drive! It was a riot when I had a passenger in the car that didn't know about the problem. They'd nearly have a stroke. Now I use stainless fuses from iPd and dielectric grease.

good luck,

My '86 245 was doing that same thing. Happened very seldom. After looking over the archives and the Bentley manual, I decided the problem was likely electrical. I made the list below and went through it:
-checked O2 sensor action (was ok)
-cleaned connections at AMM
-cleaned connector at distributor
-cleaned connectors at injectors
-cleaned connector at throttle position switch
-cleaned pump fuse up by the coil
-cleaned all ground connections in engine compartment (and several others throghout the car)
To clean I pushed the connectors in and out several times to wipe the surfaces (I didn't have spray cleaner but that would have helped) After cleaning, I put a little silicone grease on the connections (Sylglide) to reduce future corrosion.

I can't tell you which of the above steps fixed the stalling problem but it went away and hasn't done that for about a year now.

My '85 240 DL had similar symptoms, except it never quite died -- went on for a couple of weeks or more, until (on advice from other Brickboard readers) I cleaned the contacts on the ignition coil, and have had no problems since. At or about the same time, I also checked and cleaned the distributor and put in new spark plug wires, but the coil contacts seemed to be the key. Dielectric grease, or whatever it's called, should prevent corrosion and maintain good contact.

Kiry,

Same thing happened on my 86. Check the fuel pump fuse (it looks like a very small black box) that is near power steering pump reservoir. It's just to the right of the power steering pump reservoir if you're in front of the car. Chances are that it is wet or corroded. You could possibly clean it or go to Radio Shack for a replacement for about $4. Hope this helps. George
