244 Turbo Clutch Parts-Question 200 1983

Greetings All,

I went to buy clutch parts for our 83 244T this PM and found out that my source recommends the same kit (SACHS #242-04) for both the NA and the Turbo (215 mm disc and P-Plate). I know that the factory parts have different #s, but am curious as to the actual / physical difference (i.e., Turbo's P-Plate has more clamping force, etc.). I'd like to think my parts source is selling the turbo parts to put in all of the M-46 (non-intercooled) cars--but know that's probably wishful thinking.

FWIW, I'm already planning to resurface the flywheel, plus check the condition of the level and cable. T-O bearing and pilot bearing will both be replaced, as will the raer main seal. Anything else I should look at?

In terms of "bottom-line," I can get the SACHS kit for about $90 locally, while the B21FT kit (available through IPD) is $239. I don't want to be "penny-wise, pound-foolish," but is the difference worth the cost?

Any insight (esp BTDTs) would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

244 Turbo Clutch Parts-Question 200 1983

Check out the incredibly useful on line catalog at:

http://www.oconnellusedvolvos.com/Power_Train_Table.html

I would not want to screw up by installing the wrong clutch parts. Read a few posts by guys who have installations result in poor or no shift. Personally, I had great luck with the expensive but correct set of parts provided by IPD for the 244Ti.

244 Turbo Clutch Parts-Question 200 1983

Robert,

Thanks for the link--lots of good info there.

As you suggested, I re-read I've a number of the posts (their experiences were what concerned me in the first place).

FWIW, I talked to the MGR of the parts place this AM--he said that the SACHS kit in question was the one he installed in his 83 245T, and had put over 100K miles on it--would have gone farther, but somebody T-boned him at an intersection. Now if my car had the 85's stepped flywheel, there would be no question which parts to use . . . .

Thanks again for the advice.
