240 sedan rumbles in reverse 200

Another family member recently purchased a 1988 240 Sedan with 167,000 miles on it and its automatic trans. The car seems to be in overall good shape for the $1500 price. But it makes weird sounds... When you put the transmission in reverse a rumbling/trembling sound starts coming from the rear end of the car. The car will travel in reverse just fine. This sound does not occur in any of the forward gears. Any ideas as to what this means ? Also some lesser problems are a missing trip odo. button, a factory tapedeck that cuts out randomly and a erratic temperature gauge. The car is not overheating even though the temp gauge indicates that it is. Any help/ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Have someone place the car in reverse and have a look at the exaust system. In reverse the engine torques the other way and you may have exaust components hitting the body. Common with poor fit aftermarket exaust parts. Trip meter button can be purchased seperately and replaced. Pull the cluster, remove speedo, and clip a new button on. Temp guage problem is probably the temp compensating board. It lives in the cluster, so fix both at same time. Check archives or bay13 for more info.

    ovlov760,

"When you put the transmission in reverse a rumbling/trembling sound starts coming from the rear end of the car."

Does it start making the sound immediately - that is, before car starts moving or does it start making the sound once the car actually moves backward? Problem may be in transmission, drive train, rear end, brakes, or wheel bearings. Does it sound louder on one side or the other?

Walk alongside the car while it is making this noise and see if you can further pinpoint the problem area. Can you get it up on jack stands and further localize where the sound is coming from?

Does it make the same sound when it is rolling backwards in neutral? What happens when you have it in reverse, moving backwards, making the sounds, and then move the shifter into neutral? Do you still get the sounds? Do the sounds vary with vehicle speed?

Does the rear end have proper amount and type of gear oil?

Hope this helps in diagnosing it,

    Regards,

    TomD
