240 sedan rumbles in reverse 200

Another family member recently purchased a 1988 240 Sedan with 167,000 miles on it and its automatic trans. The car seems to be in overall good shape for the $1500 price. But it makes weird sounds... When you put the transmission in reverse a rumbling/trembling sound starts coming from the rear end of the car. The car will travel in reverse just fine. This sound does not occur in any of the forward gears. Any ideas as to what this means ? Also some lesser problems are a missing trip odo. button, a factory tapedeck that cuts out randomly and a erratic temperature gauge. The car is not overheating even though the temp gauge indicates that it is. Any help/ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated.
