rear shock mount questions 200 1989

hello,

i posted here a few weeks ago regarding a squeak & rattle i was getting from the rear suspension - turns out that the problem is the rear upper shock mounts - they're both quite loose, so the shocks are constantly rattling around, especially driving through the city. it figures, too, that the boge turbo gas shocks i put on the car 2 weeks ago don't fit the mounts well, and this causes the driver's side shock to vibrate (which may also be due to the loose mount). does this sound likely?

so, what can i do? i've searched, but have been unsuccessful at finding replacement mounts - i'm guessing that replacing them would be the best bet. if you know of a vendor that sells these, please let me know. or, if you know of a good way to work with what i have, do tell.

sorry if this question is somewhat basic - i'm a volvo newbie :]

thanks for any suggestions --
ian

I had a squeek after putting on new Boge Automatics. The sound came from the upper mount. I tried retightening with the wheel on the ground with little improvement. Finally I sprayed PB Blaster on the rubber mount and the squeek got much better. In about a week, the squeek was gone. Don't know if I did the right thing but it worked.

thanks for the idea, Jim -- i considered such a tactic but was uncertain of the reaction between the PB and the rubber -- i guess if it worked for you, it may work for me :]

i think i'll try that after tightening the bolts on the mounting stud, to see if that's indeed necessary.

cheers

Ian, You need to tighten the upper shock mount. Remove the wheels and shocks to get at the mount studs. I couldn't remember if the stud screwed directly into the frame or if it had a nut on the back, after looking at my Bentley manual it looks like there is a nut on the back side to tighten it up. Good luck!

thanks for the reply

what do you guys think i can do about the squeak -- it's as if the shock's upper eye is too large. any way to fix this w/o replacing my new shocks?

The eye is to large? worn? Right shock? Maybe go to the pic a part and get new used ones..

Intersting problem. It's hard to imagine the shock eye being too large for the mounting stud. It's not really a wear point. I have had a problem in the past with the stud getting loose. The stud passes throught the wheel arch and is fastened with a nut on the inside. The nut is a shallow one for some reason and sometimes hard to see because of undercoating. Less than a full turn with a 17mm (I think) wrench completely quieted it down. Good luck

you say "It's not really a wear point.", and i agree - but i think it becomes one when the stud is constantly moving about, causing friction - i think, rather than saying the eye is too big, i should have said the mounting stud looks too small, perhaps due to wear.

i managed to find the nut you mention, on the inside of the wheel arch, but have been unsuccessful at tightening it -- it seems to be quite stuck.

i'll try again this weekend, when i can afford the time to get under the car.
