Thinking of purchasing 940 Turbo-Thoughts!Help! 900 1995

I am about to pull the trigger on purchasing a 95 940 turbo. The car is impeccable has 45,000 miles, has been well maintained(never driven in winter adn garaged) and is going for $10,000 which the owner won't budge on the price. The person who services my other two Volvo's(2000 S70GLTSE and 2001 V70) has twenty years experience in servicing Volvo's at a local dealership including service foreman for ten years. He is honest as the day is long and opened his own shop 6 months ago(half the price to service the car and better service too boot). This particular car is his cousins' and he indicated that if he were in the market for a car he himself would buy it. Although the price may be a bit high I have looked around for a 940 and can't find any with comparable miles care etc. I saw one the other day for $8,500 and it had 85,000 miles on it but there is not a lot of history with the car and two owners.

My question is what type of maintainence should I be looking to do immediately on the car and what should I look out for. I have heard that these run forever but am I paying exorbitantly too high a price for a car in this condition. Thanks for your insight as I am not mechanically inclined but take
very good care of my vehicles(oil changes every 3000 miles etc. etc.)

I purchased a 1995 940 Turbo 2 years ago with 32K, all service records from dealer, couple of dings paid 14K. Took it to my mechanic and it turned out that we both use the same mechanic. Only thing except for routine maintenance is the A/C accumulator sprung a leak and had to be replaced. Buy the car If everything checks out, change to synthetic's and have fun for the next 10 years.

BUY IT!!!! 900 1995

I know someone who bought a '95 945T two years ago, with 65,000 mi, for the same price. He's been perfectly happy with it. You simply won't find a better RWD Volvo. I'm jealous!

If you don't want it, I do.

I looked for over2 years for a low mileage 95or 94 turbo wagon, I finally found it on ebay, and paid $11000 for it with 67K, all volvo dealer service records

I dunno if I'd describe that price as being exorbitantly high. If you said $13k, I'd agree. That sounds like a new car. So, for basically $10k, you're stepping back in time and purchasing an almost new $25k+ brick. I just purchased a 94 945T with 91k for a little over $5k (will pick up this weekend), but even though I haven't seen, I'm sure the condition is half as good as the one you describe. Also, if you plug your data into the NADA guide, you'll think you're getting a deal. Plug it in to Edmunds, and you'll think you're getting ripped off. Good luck with your decision.... Oh yeah, I've never seen a 95 as nice/low mileage as the one you described.

That's practically a new car, so if it's OK now (you might want to have it checked by a mechanic) I'ld say you're probably pretty OK in the short term. Try to find evidence of a timing belt change - although they're specced for 50-100K they're also time-limited parts, and at 7 years I'ld consider replacement if such hasn't been done yet.

Otherwise, Steve's excellent 700-900 FAQ provides a pretty good list of what to look at maintenance-wise when buying a used 700 or 900.

Maybe slightly high, but remember, this car really doesn't need service other than fluid changes and hoses, just because of age, not miles. I would vote for it, especially if it is as good as it sounds.

Just make sure the miles are accurate with carfax. That price while it might seem high compared to others, isnt that high with that low of milage. You're paying for the low miles. Make sure the belts have been replaced and that there is no salvage history.....Other than that you should be good to go
