I had a friend with a similiar problem with their 264. Turned out that there
wasn't anything wrong with the trans. The motor mounts were bad and the motor
was torquing over which seemed like a slipping automatic trans.

If you do have too much oil in the trans, you could probably disconnect one of the oil lines by the radiator and let the trans pump out the extra. This is also the way to completely change and flush the trans oil. Make sure to check those mounts, my friend didn't discover them until they broke and the fan ate the radiator when the motor changed position. Hope this helps you.

Does the fluid smell burnt? If it does then the trans is probably going bad.
The trans for the 260 series is not known for durability. Maybe if you have the
last year, 82 when Volvo probably put a AW70/71 in there, but the BW 55 trannys
not so good. Hey, look at the good side, the car is prepping itself for the
Chebby or Fjord V8 conversion I know you want to do. The Bertone is a great
car for the conversion and you'll be giving it the performance to go with all
that luxury.

Yeah, you can install an AW70/71. You'll have to find the same setup in a
760 or if you can find a 1982 264 model with the auto. You have to get the
setup from a car with the same V6 auto setup. The bell housing is different
for the four cylinders and I don't believe the bell housing unbolts from those
types of trannys. Make sure to get the driveshaft. If you don't have the
shifter with the O/D switch you'll want to get that also.

Are you going to resurrect the turbo?

nah the turbo is long gone... my bertone is sportin' my old 242ti's grille and wheels though.. just ta tide me over till i design and build a dope ass grille fer mah bertone and till i get my v8... i wanna hold off on getting my 17"s or 18"s until I put the v8 in there that way I know how the car is gonna sit and what wheels are gonna be the best bet. but nah Im not even sure where my old car went... i gave it to my friend and he took a buncha stuff off it.. then my mechanic got his hands on it and took the hood or trunk or something and then it went to a salvage yard I think... maybe I'll see it one day.. hehe
