air recirc switch...how should it behave 900 1991

Hi, yet another question guys, but my 940 is getting gradually sorted thanks to you!

I have an optional air con package fitted to my 940 turb0 estate (well i think its an option because:-

the air con and recirc switches are on a switch panel in the switch insert immediately to the left of the stearing wheel, NOT on the heater control panel.

This switch insert looks factory genuine and has a snow flake on the upper switch which illuminates purple/blue when pushed in and locks.

The lower switch has a recirc symbol on it and when pushed in illuminates orange/yellow - IT DOES NOT LOCK. When illuminated i can (I think) also hear a relay fire and release when i release the switch.

As thi switch is in NONE of the manuals I can find I need to know should the recirc switch lock (if so it looks like volvo gen only and damn expensive!) or should the lock be achieved by a relay that is defective..or am i totally missing the point here?

PS the aircon is also U/S but i can feel the comprssor load comming on and off the motor...

many thanks in advance...

Patrick

Hey there,

Just want to say a few things:

1.. Firstly I have nver seen or heard of the configuration you are talking about, with your A/C amd recirc switches position there. I am not sure, but this might have been modified or somthing... so what DO you have at the top of the center consol where they would normally be?

2.. Pretty sure the recirc switch should click and stay depressed. Otherwise, what is the point? You should be able to selct whether you want inside air or outside air.

3.. Make sure you understand the functionality of the A/C switch. These Volvos (and Saabs I think) have the A/C ON when the switch is in the out position and OFF when the switch is in the IN position.

Good luck, maybe you can ask a dealer if this switch setup of your is factory or not.

Thanks for taking the time to reply greg.

I think I have eliminated swithches being in the wrong position..

As to what I do have ...NADA ,,...ZILCH..NOTHING...

to stress I have a standard looking panel, three rotarty controls but NO buttons (or blanking plates where they should be..or anything just nice factory finish blank plastic!)

Im fairly sure the aircon was factory fit looking at it and the controls all genuine 100% volvo and im also pretty sure it would have been optional on a 91' turbo over here (not least 'cos it has a factory electric sunroof)

I have to say im as puzzled as you are because I have NEVER seen another without the recirc switch in the top panel...

That's a good one, I too have a 91 940 and the A/C switches you speak of are mounted in the A/C control unit (center console), both lock (funny thing on the A/C switch, it is ON in the OUT position, the opposite of what you would expect). I can tell you this, with the A/C running full blast, when you engage the recirc. switch, you hear an obvious change in the sound level (louder) as the flapper valves reposition. If you don't notice a change, your switch could be kaput.

Thanks for the reply, but im not sure this applies for the following reasons:-

1. I dont have a recirc button on the centre consul! or even a place for one to be, although from all the manuals i have seen I know it should be there!

2. My aircon light seems to come on when the aircon is on (although im only going on the load on the engine as the aircon doesnt seem to actually cool)

3. I can hear a relay firing when i depress the recirc switch, which suggests the switch is 'switching' but should it lock?

I know this is weird i have never seen a 940 without the recirc on the centre consul, I think there may be a change in airflow when the recirc is held in, but im just not sure!

any one with a similar instalation????

I understand your switches are not in the same place as mine. I was just trying to explain how the comparable switches in my car work along with some tell-tale attributes to look for. Have you tried cooling with the A/C switch in the opposite position from where you would think it should be? If your unit was a dealer installed option, the switches probably function the same as the factory installed ones and the factory switch is ON (A/C engaged) in the OUT position. On my car, the switch is OFF when the color is orange and yellow/white when the A/C is working.
