What is that noise??? 700 1986

Hi, any ideas of what is "clanking" on braking to a stop? It gives one, somewhat loud "clank" and that is it. It also is apparent upon quick repeated taps on the gas pedal, I'm guessing it's related to transmission. Sound is like taking a hammer and taping on a steel pipe. It is more prevalent when engine is cold. Tranny flush??? U-joint???? disaster??? This is an '86 740 Turbo Wagon with 242K. Thanks

well, if you think it's your transmission, try this:

while moving along, put your car into neutral. then brake. if you still get the clanking, it's not your transmission. this sounds like a small test that should work. :-)

when was the last time you did a tranny flush though? might be time. automatic or manual?

how fast do you have to be going to hear it? is it possible to have someone outside the car walking at the same rate to listen if it's coming from the rear or front?

Could be:
U-Joint, Ring and pinion gear, Splined yoke on tranny (if Volvo's have them, which I am not sure of.

I doubt it is in your tranny, although it may be.

Best way to tell... Get your brick on a lift or get the rear up on jack stands. Put it in neutral with the P-brake set. Rotate the driveshaft by hand while you are under the car and see where the play is. listen and look closely. Spend 15 min or so under there and you'll be able to figure it out.

Good luck.

Check to make sure your exhaust system is firmly attached. When they are loose they make all sorts of strange bad sounding noises
