Early B230F life expectancy? 200 1985

We often talk about the early ('85-M/Y '88) B230Fs as being somewhat "weaker" than later incarnations of this engine. I have not quite 216K (215,897 to be exact) on my '85 DL, and she doesn't show any signs of slowing down-yet. The engine has never undergone major surgery (head's never even been off) and does not use an appreciable amount of oil (maybe 1/8 quart in 3,000 miles). Compression? No idea, but she still moves quite swiftly when I floor it. Only problem that she has is a case of "piston slap" when cold. This has been going on for about 5 years, or since approx. 150K.

So, how long can I expect this one to last? Has anyone ever seen an early B230F do >300K?

(Since someone is bound to ask...It's had a steady diet of Castrol GTX 10w30 dino juice and Volvo/Mann filters since new.)

Thanks guys. :-)

Mine's at 294,314 right now. It seems to be doing quite well, no oil consumption, no smoke, decent accelleration. (no porsche, but what do
you expect from a big heavy box with a 4cyl...)

    cheers!

I'd say you've got about another 215k to go.

450,000-500,000 is not uncommon for these engines. I had one of the first, an '85 245DL with a build date of 10/84. At 270k, the body gave out and the engine was still fine.

So I sold it for $300. I'd paid $500 for it an put on 35k. Struck me as a fair deal.

Many more miles. I'm at 308,000 on my 740 and I treat it well, but trust me, it was a abused company car for the first 150,000k of its life, got regular oil changes, but lots of diffrent drivers and drivers who drove it hard.

Keep oil in it, keep water in it, and fix it when ever something goes wrong.

Many more miles of happy motoring are ahead.

Hello Bob! As John mentioned, the "weak" point in early b230 is the thin rods and bearings, this has little or no effect on the life lenght on a original engine.
The problem starts at high rpmīs and/or high compression ratios.

I would think my 86 B230F brick with less than 115K miles is probably broken in now, I hope it has a few good years left in it.....

    Keep up the good oil
Dont let it get too hot
Dont let it get too lean or rich
    Keep the crankase breathing
Replace those oil seals when they get bad
    Keep away from bad mechanics
DIY that way you know it is done.

    And happy motoring
    Regards
    Karl

Expect it to go longer if properly maintained. My wife's 85 dL wagon had greater than 300,000 miles on it when we gave it to a friend. She then updated her car to an 88 DL wagon (which has 215000 on it now). The friend drove it around as a car to carry his tools to work. He then bought a truck and we gave the car away to charity (still running fine). I think the last odometer reading we ever saw was ~340000.

The issue with the early B230 engines is weaker connecting rods which are only an issue in the turbocharged B230FT. Keep changing the oil regularly and it will certainly keep going until you are tired of it.
