Car Won't Start....... Fuel pump??? 200

Hey all, got a major major problemo here.

Lemme see if I can cover this well enough so that the prob can be pinpointed.

I have a 1979 242DL.
B21F Engine

Last night, as i was leaving work and heading home, i jumped in my car and noticed that the oil light was glowing a faint red. It had been raining that night and i figured it was the rain that had gotten onto the fuses and caused that light to glow slightly. I tried starting up the car anyway... Boom.. IT fired right up, with no problems, so i took my 20 minute commute back home, ....... I got home, shut off the car, went inside my house..... About an hour later while i was watching tv, my cousin gets home, comes in the house and tells me that my car is making a funny noise.

So I head outside, and I hear the noise/buzz. It was coming from underneath the hood. I popped open the hood, and realized one of the connectors was making the noise. So I then tried starting up my car. ATTEMP Unsuccessful. The engine turned over, but didn't fire up. So i disconnected the battery, and figured i'd try to start the car again in the morning. Morning comes, I try starting it up, but with no success. Engine cranks, but doesn't fire up.
#$%^#$#.

So i check out the fuses make sure they're clean and dry. I also try the "jump fuses #5 and 7" technique to be sure my fuel pump was working correctly. I did this because the connecter that was buzzing under the hood stopped buzzing after i had removed the Fuel pump fuse. Anyway, i tried the 5 and 7 technique. I tried again to start up my car, but it still didn't fire up. IT hesitated a bit as if it wanted to start up, but it didn't. I checked the 'buzzing' connector to make sure it was clean and dry, it was. But now, whenever I try starting up my car, after an unsucessful attempt, that dang connector keeps buzzing until i completely turn off the ignition.

(Keep in mind that it was buzzing under the hood last night even though the car was completely off) Now, it's only when I have the key in the ignition that the dang connector continues to buzz (after an successful attempt). For instance, i try starting the car by going to the #2 ignition position, it doesn't start, then I click the key back to the #1 position and the connector from under the hood buzzes. if I move the key to its original #0 spot, the buzzing from under the hood discontinues.

Is it most likely a short somewhere in the fuel pump wiring? or might it be something more major than that? I'm without a vehicle right now because of this, so if anyone can offer some advice on how I might alleviate this problem, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Robert I

I took the liberty of taking a few snapshots of the connector i'm talking about......

BTW, I am getting spark, I also tested to see if i was actually getting fuel flow. No gas was even reaching the fuel filter......

So it's either one of the fuel pumps, or just something electrical?

That looks like your frequency valve.....that buzzing is normal, but not with the key off.

You may have multiple problems. How is your wire harness?

By all means resolder your fuel pump relay. Is there 12V to the main fuel pump?

Bear with me....... What exactly is the wiring harness? I've seen that a bunch of times but never quite understand what it is. If you could let me know i'll be sure to inspect it.

Also, i thought i'd make an update on my fuel pump troubleshooting.

Here's the deal. I removed the fuel filter so that i could check to see if gas was actually pumping through the hose line. I tried starting my car the usual way, but NO gas pumped through the hose at all. (I had a plastic cup handy so i could catch any gas that might come out). However, I tried an alternate procedure..... I put a jumper wire between fuel pump fuses 5 and 7, and while they were jumped, i tried to start my car again. This time, gas began to pump through the hose and into the plastic cup.

I do hear the main fuel pump activate when i jump the fuses, but ONLY when they are jumped. If i try to start my car up the regular way without the fuses jumped.. I hear nothing from the fuel pump.

So, for some reason, the fuel pump only activates when i have fuses 5 and 7 jumped.

Is this attributed to the wiring harness? Like i said before, I'm not exactly sure what the wiring harness is... so any information would definitely help out a lot.

Thanks.

Does sound like your relay is toast.

Your wire harness is basically all the wires under your hood around your engine, in particular how do the wires to the water temp sender, the oil pressure sensor and the alternator look?

The buzzing frequency valve does not sound related to the bad fuel pump relay.

Which connector was it (the buzzing one), can you describe its location and what it looks like?
