Car Won't Start....... Fuel pump??? 200

Bear with me....... What exactly is the wiring harness? I've seen that a bunch of times but never quite understand what it is. If you could let me know i'll be sure to inspect it.

Also, i thought i'd make an update on my fuel pump troubleshooting.

Here's the deal. I removed the fuel filter so that i could check to see if gas was actually pumping through the hose line. I tried starting my car the usual way, but NO gas pumped through the hose at all. (I had a plastic cup handy so i could catch any gas that might come out). However, I tried an alternate procedure..... I put a jumper wire between fuel pump fuses 5 and 7, and while they were jumped, i tried to start my car again. This time, gas began to pump through the hose and into the plastic cup.

I do hear the main fuel pump activate when i jump the fuses, but ONLY when they are jumped. If i try to start my car up the regular way without the fuses jumped.. I hear nothing from the fuel pump.

So, for some reason, the fuel pump only activates when i have fuses 5 and 7 jumped.

Is this attributed to the wiring harness? Like i said before, I'm not exactly sure what the wiring harness is... so any information would definitely help out a lot.

Thanks.
