AC – Installed electric fan, now compressor cycles on&off – doesn’t cool well 700 1986

My 86 740GLE has an electric fan in front of the condenser that is activated by a termoswitch in the radiator. I installed a relay that bridges this switch to turn on the fan whenever the AC is on. Now the compressor clutch engages for about 5sec and then disengages for about 5 sec at 2000RPM. The pressure switch at the evaporator is opening and closing. Does this mean that the charge is too much? Too little? The system has been converted to R134a by a Volvo dealer (it has a new evaporator).

Thanks,
Steve

2000 rpm.

What are the A/C settings? Outside temperature? The system will cycle under cooler conditions, or conditions where the fan is on a very low setting and it is already cool in the car.

Make sure you establish some of those things before giving it a squirt of R134. If you overcharge a 134 system, your cooling will stink, pressures will go sky high, and you run the risk of blowing something up.

Also, the condenser fan that now runs when the A/C is on, is more effective and will cause more cycling if anything.

Add 134.

Sorry, it was the receiver-dryer that they replaced, not the evaporator

Either low on charge, malfunctioning pressure switch, or switch out of adjustment.

Most likely are a little low on charge.
