Non-functioning A/C 200 1982

Hi all,

I've got a baffling A/C issue on my hands with my '82. The freon appears to be "chock-a-block" full as they say, but I can't blow cold air. Is there a relay for the A/C I can check somewhere? The fuse looks good and everything else. I'm in desperate need of some cool air.

Thanks guys.

GRocky

You do have a low pressure cutoff for the compressor. When you turn on the AC knob does the clutch engage on the compressor? Does the fan work? Does the control valve cutoff the heater? Need more details. There is a relay located behind the center console with a 5 wire connector (brown, white, green, blue-yellow and red). The blue yellow goes to fuse 12. If the alternator is not charging properly the AC relay will not engage through the blue-yellow wire. Hope this helps.

Grocky,

Its either a "no charge" or the AC Valve

For an alailable alternative to R 12 that actually works and does not cost a gazillion bucks a can try these links...

i don't know if this will apply to your 82, but it sure worked on my 87. did you check the vacuum check valve? i replaced that little punk and now my vents, cruise control, and A/c all work. not bad for $9

Hi -

By full, so you mean you see no bubbles in the sight glass? Form the rest of your post, I assume that everything else works OK. Compressor clutch engages, blower fan blows, all that, right?

Unfortunately, the lack of bubbles also denotes zero Freon. When full there are usually a few, maybe a few seconds apart, visible in the sight glass.

My older 240's did not have the cut-off switch on the receiver/dryer. Is that the case on your system? If you DO have a switch, and the clutch engages, there is pressure in the system, and therefore the problem can be other than low Freon.

Does the cold/hot slide switch really shut off the water to the heater core?

Good Luck,

Bob
