No Compression for the A/C 700 1986

The Air Conditioning in my brick does not work well.
It doesn't even sound like my compresser is functioning, I can't hear it cycle on and off like it's supposed to. Has anyone else run into this?
Some cool air comes out of the vents though (not cold), and the fan works, any suggestions on what the problem could be? I don't want to go into the dealer and get ripped off if I can isolate the problem.
Any suggestions...

First of all stay away from a dealer. Use dealer only for warranty or recall work on newer cars. Find a reputable Volvo independent shop. If AC compressor fails to start you may be very low on freon. There is a switch on the accumulator which senses the low pressure. It can be momentarily jumpered to check for the low freon condition.

Fred and Allen...

Do your systems have a charge?

I am experiencing the same problem ...I think my compressor is OK.
Fuse is OK...I can't find or suspect any shorts. I think that it is the AC relay and I am trying to locate it.
I will let you know / If you find out something ....
