O/D DOA in 86 245 (M47!) 200 1986

this little quirk isn't helping me with my gas milage!
note that i have a 5-speed, not an auto.)

....my brick is normal for about the first 5-10 minutes of driving. i go to shift from 4th to overdrive, and my RPM's drop from 2000 to about 1500. normal. but then, right after it warms up some, whenever i go to do this same thing, it acts like it stays in 4th gear until i let off of it. when i do this, it acts as though i've pushed down the clutch (the car goes to idle). then, whenever i hit my accelerator, the rpms go back up to 2000 rpm (as if it was back in 4th gear.)

Has anyone else had this problem? I think it's kinda odd. As a side note, i havent checked my fluid levels for the O/D partition of the transmission. Does one even exist? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Andrew Gyger (MacGyger)

ODGuru covered the bases far better than I could. Just a comment though...1500rpm is awfully low for overdrive and puts a considerable strain on the engine ('lugging'). I usually shift into OD at 55mph (2500 in 4th, 2000 in OD) and still get better than 25mpg. Car seems to like this better. No lugging or undue vibrations from drivetrain when I try to accelerate.

    Just a thought. :-)

      hey, BOB, about the RPM---

i usually am doing 40 mph when i put it in o/d because i usually drive long distances going that speed (i live in the country, bumer!) dont feel the motor needs to be up in the 2000 range for that long-- i usually put it in OD when i'm crusing. whenever i need the extea speed, though, i always take it out of OD. I can see where you are coming from though on how it's hard on the motor to lug around......

      Thnaks for the help everyone!

This is the way I look at it, Volvo designed the car to cruise at 55, so that is the lowest speed to engage the OD (at least my 85 was designed for 55, that was the speed limit then.) 2000 RPM in OD minimum.

i dont wanna be a jerk, but check out your owner's manual on page 37 (this is in the 1986 book). in the middle column at the bottom it says....

"To improve mileage, it is reccommended to use the overdrive as much as possible at speeds above 30 mph (50 km/h)."

Also, on page 91, it gives a chart of vehicle speed at 1000 rpm (almost idling). For overdrive, it says 26.9 mph. Looking at this, it leads me to believe that doing 40 in overdrive really isn't all that bad. It is better on the engine doing this than having it whining at the 2000-2300 rpm range for mabby hours at a time.

This coming directly from Volvo, I don't think i have been doing anything wrong engaging my o/d at 40 mph. But really, it's not that big of a deal. Anyone can shift whenever they want. I just wanted to point that out. Please don't think i'm a dick.

Oh yhea, and i definitley did make a mistake... my tranny is an M46, not an M47 as i had originally stated. I am sorry for the confusion.

Wow, you guys shift early. I wait until about 70 mph before I shift into overdrive. I find the car has zero pulling power in OD. I like 4th a lot!

Fluid level of OD is part of the transmission fluid. A correct level in trans is correct in OD.

Three problems may be combining to cause your symptoms.

A solenoid that needs cleaning and new O-rings, and the actuating piston seals beginning to fail. If your OD had the Teflon O-ring actuating piston seals you may also have to clean out the meter port between the dashpot and the solenoid. Once the teflon seals fail they particle out and leave traces around to cause port blockage problems. Replace with regular "rubber" O-rings. N-butyl-'something' is the compound of choice.

All three are self do able but are a PITA. The alternative is buy a replacement solenoid (Do it yourslf for $40 if you have to buy a tool) or $186 to dealer for solenoid.

The actuating piston seal replacement is explained under the 700/900 FAQ's under transmission.
