D-jet fuel pump interchangability 1951

Hello,

For a while I was having terrible problems with the 122E in hot weather. The D-jet pump would simply stop pumping fuel, instead just howling and spinning. The hotter it was, the worse the problem. I never had problems if the outside temp was less than 75 or 80. Finally, after yet another unexpected walk home, I decided enough was enough.

On a BMW 2002 message board there was a fellow that was having similar issues with his 2002 tii and solved it using a different pump. I learned that the 2002 tii used the same fuel pump for its Kugelfischer fuel injection as the Bosch D-jet. It has better suction for pulling fuel out of the tank, quieter operation, and is about half the price of the D-jet pump. I was convinced it was worth it, so I installed the new pump and modified the wiring and plumbing as necessary. Now for the test.

To test, I took it to work the next day and waited until the bank sign up the street (which sits in the sun) read 115 degrees and headed out. I sat in traffic, I drove in parking lots, I floored it up hills. The car didn't have even the slightest problem and I could take the heat no longer, so back to work I went. The newer technology is far superior to the OEM parts. I would suggest doing the same thing to anyone who finds themself needing a new fuel pump.

Chris, can you get us a Bosch number for that pump? We don't have
many BMW dealers around here and I'm sure their parts prices are
as badly inflated as Volvo dealers.

The Bosch part number is 0 580 464 048,
I got it from thepartsbin.com. Their price was so much cheaper than everywhere else that I bought a wad of other things while I was at it. Anyway, the outlet is between the terminals. I have more information that I'm writing up now, but this and the other things solved a lot of intermittent issues I'd been having with the 122.

Chris, none of the old injected Volvos had a surge tank, just some internal baffling. I was drawn to this pump because it was Bosch and not some no-name Napa pump, because I've heard BMW owners talk about its longevity, and because I was absolutely certain it would deliver the necessary pressure. I have a habit of going cheap, only to have to re-do it later. Rather than take a chance here, I just went the whole hog (or something like that...)

I'd guess that any fuel pump that mechanically fits into the
space and that gives the correct fuel flow and pressure would
be good to use. I'd use the cheapest thing that fits and is
quiet. The potential down side is that the OEM fuel pump has
a known life span and it could be that some other pump may only
last a couple years.

Does the oem fuel injection system by volvo have a surge tank?
chris
