Turbo overheating... Replacing Radiator? 200 1984

Hello
My family has a 1984 240 Turbo with intercooler. It has 55,000 miles on it. Recently the car started to over heat. We found that the Radiator has a crack in it and is leaking coolant. What would be the best way to replace it? Should we get a volvo radiator or some type of aftermarket? We don't have a lot of money and me and my Dad want to do it our selves. This car is are only way of getting around and we really like it. Also it has automatic transmission. I would appreciate if any one has any experience who can help me. Thanks

Turbo overheating... Replacing Radiator? 200 1981

Mike,

I purchased a Modine radiator w/lifetime warranty from NAPA for ~$140. The radiator was an exact replacement for my 1988 760 Turbo (however, the radiator is that same as the one in your 240 Turbo) and has metal tanks. This model, with lifetime warranty, is an excellent price and is a good choice for a replacement. I would also recommend thoroughly cleaning the A/C condensor and intercooler while the radiator is removed. They get dirty and packed with bugs and things. Cleaning these will make a big difference also. I hope this helps...

A 3-row metal radiator like the Nissens brand (~$150 new) or other like Modine will be a good investment. You will also have a chance to look at the thermostat and I would check out the water pump too. If you want a used metal radiator, let me know.

Ditto on the Nissens 3 row radiator, a great investment for my car!! Where did you manage to find that sweet ride with that mileage???

Hey thanks guys for your input. I think I will go with the Nissen radiator. But do you know if I can use the same hoses? My Dad bought the car new. It's been kept in the garage a lot and it looks great. We want to keep this car for a long time.

yes, the same hoses will work.... but, its a great time to change them...
If you are serious about this car, while you have the radiator removed you should:

replace the three front engine seals: crank, intermediate, and cam
change the timing belt
change the timing belt tensioner - if it hasnt been done yet.

All of these items are easy to do... but much much easier to do with the radiator removed.

Have fun!!
