automatic transmission stays in low range. 200

The automaic transmission on my 245 in low range and the light on the dash is lighting up as it should. The problrm is that I can't get it to respond to the button on the shifter knob. The transmission has performed perfectly up to this point, just went over 200K. I hope that this is a simple selenoid or electrical problem of somt type. Help

When you say :low range" does that mean that 3rd gear, and that it won't go into 4th (overdrive)?

If so, then perhaps it can be a solenoid or switch problem, but with 200k miles on it, it may well be in need of a rebuild. My '83 245GLT automatic needed a rebuild at around 200k miles. Hell, the car might have had more miles then that on it since I bought it used JUST ONE MONTH PRIOR to the tranny refusing to go into 4th (overdrive) and the odometer didn't work anyway. People say these trannies are tough and maybe so but 20 years and 200k plus miles on a used car with several possible owners exhibiting the conditions you say sounds to me like it's in need of a rebuild.

I think I paid like $1,400 for mine back in '97. Mind you that was for a rebuild, not a new tranny from volvo.

My OD on my '82 245GLT m46 manual tranny stopped working when the car heated up and all i had to pay was like 250 bucks for my mechanic to craqck it open and install new rings on the OD pistons.

$250 sure beats $1,400 for an overdrive fix in my book, hence my liking for the manual transmission.

In fact, with the exception of my Nissan Sentra, all my other used cars that I bought that had automatics (an Audi, VW, Hyundai and my '83 volvo) *all* needed transmission rebuilds within about 6 months of me buying the car. Maybe that's why the owners sold them?! LMAO

Anyway, it's easier on the wallet to have a manual tranny instead of an automatic, even the weirdo m46 with it's bizarre push-button overdrive instead of a regular 5th gear.

Thanks

I consulted the archives and they sent me the correct direction. I resoldered cracked runs on the circuit board on the relay. This appears to have fixed the problem. The tranny has 200k and I am crossing my fingers.
