exact figures are hard to come by, but...

There were 23,445 1979 242's built. That's a worldwide figure.

In and of itself, that's a pretty small number.

But some of those cars were 242GT's. How many? Hard to say, it appears Volvo only counted by chassis type.

No such beast as a 1979 242GL, BTW.

242's were always built in smaller numbers than sedans or wagons. That's why the 242 was (officially) allowed to die in 1984.

Of course, they're not nearly as rare as 262's.

More good trivia. The standard roof 262 was only available for two model years, 1976-77. It appears from the figures that I have that they were ONLY available in GL trim.

The standard-roof 262 is actually the rarest 200 series car:

MY 1976: 3099
MY 1977: 230

No single engine/year/body configuration is more rare than the '77 262.
