Cooling relays/fuse/radio area..is this a good idea....or not 900

hi guys,

I have just changed my stereo unit to a blaupunkt unit..and all the speakers..and disconected the amp......and removed the graphic...

and i now have a hole where the graphic was..with no back in it (obviously it can be a cubby hole if a back is inserted.

Now having read (extensively) about how relays have problems ...and having some 40mm 12volt fans to hand...It occured to me that fitting a mesh back to the cubby hole and mounting a couple of fans run from the ciggy lighter (total load 1.6 watts!) would wash some cool air in there while the ignition is on...

can anyone see a down side to the plan? the only negative i can see is i guess in the event of an electrical fire the flames get fanned...but then again you might find out sooner...

also any thoughts about pushing air into the fusebox area or pulling it out into the body of the car?

i do have some 140mm 3.6 w fans...but it might be a little overkill!

i look forward to the feedback as always!

btw....after workign on many other cars i have to say Volvo's are WEIRD but at least you can get to stuff!

Considering you're running an aftermarket unit on the stock wiring, it won't hurt a thing. There have been fires attributed to aftermarket stereos (mostly higher performance ones) caused by inadequate wiring inside the dash on 700 series models. i don't think the wiring changed appreciably in the 900 series.

As far as pushing air through there, pull it from the cabin and have it eject near the footwell... or wherever else it goes to.

downside? none, assuming you fit some sort of filter to the intake so you're not drawing dust and crud in.

Naw, Volvos are perfectly normal - everything else is weird.
