Alternator wiring info 700

HI
I have a 1987 740 GL. I am having problems with my alternator in that it seems to be shorting somewhere and not charging the battery. Can anyone tell me the what wires I should look out for in this situation? There seems to be a few at the back that I do not know what they are for. Also if the plastic has flaked off the wiring is it fine to insulate it with electrical tape or actually to cut off and replace the section of wiring? any help would be great.....

Though some people reported some success with repairing.
There is no permanent cure for a flaking harness
    other than replacing it.
Considering also the time what it takes to repair all ends,
the replacement harness is cheaper in time and effort.
Check out the oilpress.sensor contacts and the multiple
connectors at the right and left strut towers.
They go all bad sooner or later.

Dave has them for a very reasonable price.

The red wire going into the back supplies the exciter current for the windings. If this shorts or disconnects, you will have no charge. It goes through the strut tower connector to the instrument panel. Check for continuity.

If your wiring harness is expiring, there is really no cure other than a new harness. You can insulate with the paint-on plastic or tape, but both these are subject to engine heat and won't last for long. A better approach is to cut out the offending section and crimp-and-solder a new section into it. See the FAQ for more information.
