M46 won't shift into 1st or 2nd without lifting 'reverse' ring 200

I just bought a new beater, an 82 GLT with an M46. Problem is, I cannot get into 1st or 2nd without pulling up on the shifter ring used to access reverse.
Any ideas? I have heard it may be an alignment problem - but how to fix?

Pop out the 4 plastic retainers that hold the shifter boot and pull it up. You will see the reverse lock gate, and the screws/slots to adjust it. Loosen the 2 screws and slide the gate a bit to the left. Engage 1st gear and adjust the gate for slight clearance from the lockout lug at the base of the shifter. Make sure 1st and 2nd work ok and the lock functions properly. Tighten screws and reassemble boot.

lift up the shift boot. is the shifter toward the drivers side of the car? Is it hard to get into revers? if so it could be the motor mount or tranny mount.
