Redline MTL in a M46? 200

What's the consensus? I've searched throught the archives and found conflicting reports. I just bought 3 quarts of the stuff and am hesitant to put it in. Climate here can get a little cold in winter . Some below zero mornings. usually 10-15F is as cold as it gets, almost always gets up to 30-40F by afternoon. If I wait 5 minues or so to engage the OD on cold mornings, think I'd be OK? Transmission and OD work fine but I get a little grind from 4th to 3rd sometimes if I rush the shift. Once the OD started dropping out but this was after about 30 min of highly spirited driving (85MPH+). Thanks for any suggestions.

All the messages below have given you more than enough to go on, but I won't let that stop me! I put the Redline MTL (not MTL-90, too thick) in my 83 and observed an immediate improvement in shift smoothness - very slick. One of my reasons for the MTL was that my OD would shudder and drop out after a drive at highway speeds on a warm day, when the car's speed slowed down. I attributed this to thinning out of the original ATF at high temps, and leaking past the seals (which obviously need replacement). The MTL improved this situation a lot - the OD is more stable and seems to engage more smoothly.

Another thing - the first 20,000mi with MTL saw the car go through several severe winters (Calgary, Alberta) and it performed better than ATF. The synthetic MTL definitely has superior viscosity-temp characteristics. This is one of those products which delivers what it promises.

I use it in my '85 turbo with M-46 it really improved the shifting.

I put the stuff in my Datsun and found that I had to shift into first before going to reverse. This was to stop the gears from turning so that I could shift. Thats the only problem I've had with redline. The tech that did the clutch, trans seals, and fluid replacement said it was due to the "thin" nature of the redline oil. It was the grade specified for this trans.

One of the points of synthetic oil is that it maintains its viscosity more evenly with changes in temperature. So I would suspect you'd get better performance in the very cold.

My opinion is it's the best trans lubricant I've ever used. I put this in my M46 in my 275k mile 82 turbo and it made the shifting much smoother. I also put it in my friends 250k mile M47 in his 87 244dl and it also made the shifting much smoother.

I put the stuff in my '83 240 M46 last winter and I found that it really made a noticeable positive difference especially with the OD which shifts so smooth you can hardly feel it. The temps up here get to -30F and I had no problems even with cold weather shifting like I did prior to installing redline MTL.
