Testing speedometer sensor with ohm meter 700

I tested the ohms between the two terminals at the speedo sensor in my 86 740 and I get 0.00 ohms. I had heard that the value should be 600 to 1600 ohms. Is that correect? What does this indicate if I get no resistence at all? A shorted sensor?

I don't know the correct range for the speedometer sensor coil, but if you've got your ohmmeter set to a low ohms range (x1, x10) and you're seeing 0 ohms that is indeed a dead short.

Well, now that I know it is shorted, has anyone ever taken a sensor out out of the diff? I can see from a picture of the new one that it seems to be pressed in and just has a sealing o-ring. I guess now might be a time to take off the diff cover and regasket. Doesn't look like it has been touched ever.

Just remove the scruve and pull the sensor out. ( It's VERY unusual with sensor problems, but I guess you tested it the right way.)

What is a scruve? Do you mean the wire plug? This problem is really driving me crazy. I got the feeling that I am going to get an (apparently) good sensor from the junkyard and it still won't work. I am tempted to just pull off the diff cover and give it a good look, change the gasket and the prop seal (which is leaking)
And make sure everything looks ok. By the way I was getting this burned wire smell in the cockpit and couldn't figure it out. It turned out to be a plastic bag that got stuck to my front muffler and was melting!!!!!(the best possible scenario) Got to rehang those mufflers!!!!!!!

You sure you test for resistance on a Volvo VSS? I guess I'm just used to my GM cars where they produce AC Voltage when the car moves....
