Car smokes with turbo hooked up 700

Asked this one before but only got 1 response. Looking for more. I have a 1990 760 turo wagon that was smoking at idle and very badly during heavy acceleration under turbo boost. I disconnected the wastegate linkage rod from it's post and have been running the car this way for weeks. The smoking has disappeared. Tried hooking the wastegate back up and smoke came right back almost immediatly at idle. Oil seperator and hoses are clear. Any other ideas other than what i'm assuming "the turbo" 195,000 miles on it. TIA

Johr- it is blue smoke and the car with turbo hooked up burns about a quart every 400 miles. Considerably less of course with the wastegate disconnected.

Is it black smoke? If it is there is probably a leak in one of the turbo hoses between the turbo and the engine throttle body. The hoses get soft usually on the underside where you can't see it easily. Take them off and check for delamination of the hose. Good luck!

On your intercooler you will find a drain hole at the bottom; open it and see how much oil comes out...I think it is 22 mm size hex. if you get more that a ounce or two probley time to have turbo rebuilt. Have you done a compression test yet? maybe rings worn...or broken.
Our 745 turbo smoked bad due to the hose from air filter box to turbo intake having a hole in it, as mentioned in previous posting..looked like oil smoke.
